We built QuantaCanvas because understanding shouldn't stop at words.
QuantaCanvas was built by two students, Jotham and Sanuth, who kept running into the same problem while learning math, physics, and computer science: sometimes you can read an explanation, understand every sentence, and still not really understand the idea.
A formula can describe a system perfectly without making that system easy to picture. A diagram can show what something looks like without showing how it changes. And a wall of text can explain a process without ever letting you actually see it happen.
We started thinking about what learning could look like if, instead of receiving another explanation, you could simply ask for a visual one. Something that moves, responds to you, and is built around the exact question you asked.
That's the idea behind QuantaCanvas.
Understanding is more than reading
We don't think explanations are bad. They are incredibly useful. But some concepts become much easier once you can see the relationships between things instead of only reading about them.
Concepts change
Many of the ideas students struggle with aren't static. They involve motion, interaction, transformation, approximation, or cause and effect. A visualization can show those changes as they happen rather than leaving the learner to imagine them.
Every question deserves its own visualization
QuantaCanvas isn't built around a fixed collection of animations. You describe what you want to understand, and the system generates an interactive visualization around that specific question.
Where it started
From a hackathon idea to something we wanted to keep building
QuantaCanvas began as a project we built for a national-level interschool hackathon. What started as an idea we wanted to experiment with made it all the way to the grand finals, where we eventually finished just short of the win.
Losing wasn't the end of the project, though. If anything, the experience made us more interested in the problem. We had built something that we genuinely wanted to use ourselves, so we decided to keep improving it beyond the competition.
Our philosophy
The goal isn't to replace learning. It's to make learning click.
A visualization isn't a shortcut around thinking. Ideally, it gives you something to think with. Once you can see what's happening, you can start asking better questions, connecting ideas, and understanding the mathematics or science underneath it.
